Council Update -- July 9, 2009
At today's July 9 Services and Budgets Council Committee (CS &B), two of COPE's motions were brought forward.
The two motions were:
COPE calling for City to endorse “Coventry Declaration” on the Olympics and Human Rights
The day before City Council will receive a report on 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Security, COPE City Councillors Ellen Woodsworth and David Cadman are asking questions about human rights and the Olympics.
They are asking the City to endorse the “Coventry Declaration” approved by conference delegates at Play the Game 2009, the sixth world communications conference on sport and society.
COPE wants City of Vancouver to call on the provincial government for a timeline for the 14 housing sites
COPE Councillor Ellen Woodsworth will be asking the City of Vancouver to call on the provincial government for a timeline for the 14 housing sites – none of which have started construction.
The City has met its obligations to ensure that the six sites covered in the 2007 deal as well as the additional two sites are ready for ground to be broken. However, nothing has happened and the government has provided no timeline for action.

Summer BBQ -- July 8
Summer BBQ on July 8 -- a little different this time!
This year, COPE has decided to change up our signature annual event, due to concerns around the availability and
sustainability of the traditional main course: salmon. Instead, we will
enjoy a “100-mile diet” dinner and have a dialogue around food security/sovereignty.

STV Debate Youtube Video Now Up!
On April 1, 2009, COPE sponsored a debate on Single Transferable Vote (STV) -- which is going to be on the ballot for the May 12 election. Pumpkinhead productions has produced this Youtube video.
COPE elects exciting new executive
On Sunday, April 5, in a packed out room of nearly 300, COPE elected an exciting new executive.
The following candidates were elected by the membership:
External Chair: Alvin Singh
Internal Chair: David Chudnovsky
Recording Secretary: Donalda Greenwell-Baker
Membership Secretary: Kate Van Meer Mass
Correspondence Secretary: Lucas Schuller
Treasurer: Nathan Allen
Fundraiser: Carlo Bodrogi
Members-At-Large: Marcus Youssef, Matt Hern, Rachel Gold, Jennifer Chan and Jennifer McKenna
