Park Board marks International Women’s Day with celebration reception

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will be celebrating International Women’s Day March 8 with a public reception from 7-9pm at Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street.


The reception will honour the women athletes recognized through this year’s Remarkable Women poster series, published by the Park Board. The public are invited to this free celebration to meet some of the women featured and create their own remarkable woman poster.

"Bloedel can be a green building, inside and out."

COPE Commissioner Loretta Woodcock is asking Vision Vancouver to signal their support in keeping Bloedel's geodesic dome intact as a legacy building for Vancouver. Recently the Vancouver Park Board issued a Request for Expressions of Interest to seek business cases or concepts for the future use of the facility, in order to address the Bloedel Conservatory's deficit operating budget.
 

Councillor Woodsworth brings anti-discrimination motion to council next week

Only days before the Olympic closing ceremonies, Councillor Woodsworth is trying to bring attention to issues of racism and discrimination that affect cities. While the opening ceremonies were considered by many not to be sufficiently culturally inclusive, Woodsworth is hoping the closing ceremonies will be more representative. She is bringing a motion to council next week to endorse a national campaign initiated by the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.

COPE School Trustee pushes for new food policy at tonight’s board meeting

The Vancouver School Board will be looking at adopting a new food policy incorporating school food gardens, at tonight’s board meeting.

According to COPE school trustee, Jane Bouey, "Making it easier for school communities to set up school food gardens has been a priority of mine for years. I've seen first hand how much students get out of gardening."

溫哥華市議員伍愛倫絕食 - 請用心關注房屋問題!

今天,COPE市議員伍愛倫(Ellen Woodsworth)在鴿子公園轉交“木匙”,開始她為期一周的2010年露宿問題絕食。以絕食呼籲加拿大重新建立一個全國房屋計劃。 (欲了解更多有關絕食運動,見所附背景資料或參看2010homelessness.ca。)

Immediate Release: February 9, 2010

At a media conference today, COPE launched the “2010 Oppressometer”, an online tool developed to monitor civil liberties during the Olympic period. The site is a tongue-in-cheek take on the US Homeland Security threat levels, documenting civil liberty concerns in the months leading up to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. The most recent entry (labeled “high”) highlights the recent story of Canadian border officials denying entry into Canada to a Chicago-based journalist critical of the Games.

Councillor Woodsworth starts hunger strike -- have a heart for housing!


Immediate Release: Feb 7, 2010

Today, COPE City Councillor Ellen Woodsworth started her week of the 2010 homelessness hunger strike, kicking off with the “wooden spoon” pass at Pigeon Park. The hunger strikes calls for the re-establishment of a National Housing Program. (For more information on the hunger strike, see the attached backgrounder or 2010homelessness.ca.)

COPE travelling neighbourhood office tomorrow 


WHAT: COPE Traveling Neighbourhood Office

COPE representatives will be there to hear about neighbourhood priorities and ask residents “what does local democracy look like to you?”. 



WHEN: Jan 21 from 3-5pm



WHERE: Laughing Bean Café at 2695 East Hastings St


This is a great location for parents picking up kids from any of the nearby schools and a chance to talk to COPE's school trustees Jane Bouey and Al Blakey.
